چکیده

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was measured for 24 p-wave resonances from 8 to 300 eV in 232Th by measuring the helicity dependence of the total neutron cross section for epithermal neutrons with an improved experimental system. Ten resonances show statistically significant parity violation. For these ten resonances the analyzing powers are all positive, thus confirming the previously observed sign correlation. The data are fit to the sum of two terms, a constant asymmetry and a fluctuating asymmetry. With this ansatz the root-mean-square PNC matrix element M=1.12 meV, which corresponds to a weak spreading widthΓw=4.7×10-7 eV. For the neighboring nuclide 238U there is no constant offset, suggesting that the sign correlation is specific to 232Th. Disciplines Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics | Physics Authors Sharon L. Parity nonconservation for neutron resonances in 238U.

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied for 24 p-wave neutron resonances in 238U from 10 to 300 eV by measuring the helicity dependence of the total neutron cross section with an improved experimental apparatus. Six resonances show statistically significant (greater than 2.9σ) parity violation. An analysis treating the PNC matrix elements as random variables yields a root-mean-square PNC matri...

Average over energy effect of parity nonconservation in neutron scattering on heavy nuclei

Using semiclassical approximation we consider parity nonconservation (PNC) averaged over compound resonances. We demonstrate that the result of the averaging crucially depends on the properties of residual strong nucleonnucleon interaction. Natural way to elucidate this problem is to investigate experimentally PNC spin rotation with nonmonachromatic neutron beam: E ∼ ∆E ∼ 1MeV . Value of the ef...

Effects of Neutron Spatial Distributions on Atomic Parity Nonconservation in Cesium

We have examined modifications to the nuclear weak charge due to small differences between the spatial distributions of neutrons and protons in the Cs nucleus. We derive approximate formulae to estimate the value and uncertainty of this modification based only on nuclear rms neutron and proton radii. We also present results of numerical calculations taking more detailed nuclear shapes into acco...

Vacuum polarization radiative correction to the parity violating electron scattering on heavy nuclei

Experimental investigations of the proton ρp(r) and neutron ρn(r) densities in heavy nuclei are very important for testing of various nuclear models. The densities are also important for many applications like, for example, precise calculations of atomic parity nonconservation. While the charge distribution (proton density) is known pretty well mainly due to data on the elastic electron scatter...

Parity Violating Measurements of Neutron Densities and Nuclear Structure

Parity violating electron nucleus scattering is a clean and powerful tool for measuring the spatial distributions of neutrons in nuclei with unprecedented accuracy. Parity violation arises from the interference of electromagnetic and weak neutral amplitudes, and the Z of the Standard Model couples primarily to neutrons at low Q. Experiments are now feasible at existing facilities. We show that ...
